Local Organic Produce in Acadiana

Here are some very good options open to you:

  1. Gotraux Family Farms

Brian and Dawn Gotraux operate an organic farm in Scott, Louisiana. They sell vegetables as well as fish, chickens and eggs. You can become a shareholder similar to EarthShare ( i.e. pay up front for weekly supply of veggies and/ or eggs) or you can purchase directly from the farm:

    Gotraux Family Farms (See Map)
    205 Facile
    Scott, La 70583
    278-3444
    http://www.gofamilyfarms.com/

    * The Gotraux's no longer sell produce at the defunct River Ranch Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. They now sell at the Oil Center Farmer's market....

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMER! (especially organic growers--this family is doing it right!)

  2. Acadiana Farmers Market

(Just FYI, unless Gotreaux's are selling there, the produce here is not organic/ chemical free) Dulles Drive, behind Corner Pantry on Foreman Drive, near Lafayette High School

    Tuesday
    7:30 am - 1:00 p.m.
    Thursday
    4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

    Saturday
    7:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

This is the longstanding farmer's market in Lafayette. Dave Richter, very long time manager of the market and local farmer par excellence, has made his entire living (yes, raising a family and putting kids through college) solely selling his vegetables weekly at this market!

    Again, SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS!

  3. Oil Center Farmer's Market

The Oil Center Farmer's Market is located in the parking lot across from Champagne's Market on Heymann Blvd on Saturday mornings from 8am til noon... recently opened, but a great option for central and north Lafayette residents!

  4. St. Martinville Creole Farmers Market

    Evangeline Boulevard (downtown St. Martinville)
    Saturday 8 a.m. - 12 noon

It's St. Martinville, what else can you say?!

  5. Pick-Your-Own Orchards:

(NOT organic or chemical-free, as far as we know)

    • Daniel and Anna Romero's Orchard

      Phone number: 365-1690
5116 Freetown Road (Just south of Broussard off Highway 90 )
      Coteau

This is a fabulous orchard--persimmons, asian pears, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, figs, etc. During peach season, there is a large PEACHES sign on the side of Highway 90. Call them and familiarize yourself with the ripening times for the various fruit because if you don't, the Asian community around Cade/ New Iberia will beat you to all the best!

    • Eddie Romero Orchard

      Phone number 364-3370
5119 Freetown Road (Just south of Broussard off Highway 90)
      Coteau

This is Daniel's (see above orchard) brother and located right across the street. I believe he he mainly has figs, but possibly other fruit as well. Best to call....

    • Kathy and Johnny Richard's Orchard

      Phone Number: 893-5706
      1307 South Henry Street
      Abbeville

Check 'em out when you just have to go to Richard's Seafood Restaurant down the road!

    • Unnamed Fruit Orchard in Breaux Bridge

Take the Breaux Bridge Highway (Carmel Ave.) to Breaux Bridge. When you arrive at the Fruit Stand, take a left towards the interstate (like you're going to Poche's) and just a short distance away, you'll see the very large and pretty grove of fig trees and citrus trees on your right side.

  6. Lafayette's Backyard Growers
(just ask them if they use chemicals....)

    • Professor's on Mimosa Drive Don't know the address, but just turn off Congress onto Mimosa Drive (Street?) not far from Adrian's Supermarket. Can't miss it. A true Lafayette institution, now run by the grandchildren I believe. Lots of vegetables, strawberries, and other berries.
    • Citrus Orchard Corner of La Neuville and Bonin Roads (at the 4-way Stop sign) (Between Verot School Road and town of Broussard) No sign, no name, but you can't miss the many large orange and kumquat trees (other fruit too, probably figs...) growing here. Pull in the driveway and knock on door, or honk. Good stuff.
    • Mr. Comeaux's 1730 Dulles Drive, right where Domingue Road intersects. Almost in Scott He's been selling his backyard-grown vegetables and fruits for many many years in his front yard. He has a little handmade sign, or just look for a pile of fruits and vegetables piled up on a bucket at the road. Okra, figs, grapefruit and oranges, bananas (green plantains). He also sells homemade jars of pickled peppers, etc..
    • If you know of any other local growers/ sellers/ farmers' markets, please drop us a line so we can add to this list. PLEASE SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD GROWERS!
